Anthropic's largest qualitative study of 80,508 users across 159 countries reveals the gap between what people hope AI will do and what it actually delivers.

Eighty thousand people told Anthropic what they want from AI. The most common answer wasn't "summarize my emails." It was more time with their families.

Published on March 20, 2026, Anthropic's What 81,000 People Want From AI study is the company's most ambitious attempt to understand its own users. The company used a version of Claude called the "Anthropic Interviewer" to run open-ended conversations with participants in December 2024, then analyzed the transcripts at scale. The result is a dense map of global AI sentiment - and a few findings that cut against easy narratives on both sides.
Hopes and Fears, Side by Side
The study's headline numbers break the population into aspirations and concerns. Neither list is what the typical AI optimist or AI skeptic would predict.

Professional excellence leads on the aspiration side, but the framing matters. Participants weren't asking for AI to do their jobs. They wanted it to handle the repetitive parts so they could focus on what they actually valued - strategy, creativity, and the ability to leave work on time. One participant put it plainly:
"For the first time, I felt AI had surpassed human quality in a business task. That day I left work on time and picked up my daughter from daycare."
On the fear side, hallucinations ranking first above job displacement is a shift worth noting. The public debate focuses heavily on automation and unemployment, but users who interact with AI daily are more worried about whether to trust the output.
"An assistant that sounds sure but is often wrong forces you to treat everything as suspect."
The "Light and Shade" Finding
The study's most analytically interesting finding is what Anthropic calls the "light and shade" pattern. Benefits and harms don't cluster in different people - they coexist in the same individual. The standout statistic: someone who values emotional support from AI is three times more likely to also fear becoming dependent on it.
This is not a contradiction. It's a rational response to using a tool you need but can't fully verify. The Israeli lawyer who told researchers "I use AI to review contracts, save time - and at the same time I fear: am I losing my ability to read by myself?" isn't confused. She's accurately describing a real tension.
The cognitive atrophy concern (16.3%) connects directly to this. Users know they're offloading cognitive work, and a significant fraction of them aren't sure the tradeoff is good for them long-term.
A Deep Regional Divide
The study finds a significant gap between the Global South and the Global North - and it runs in the opposite direction of what a governance-focused Western observer might expect.
Where Optimism Is Highest
Sub-Saharan Africa (24.2% negative sentiment), South Asia (30.8%), and Central Asia (31.1%) are the least likely to express negative views. In those regions, AI is experienced mainly as an economic equalizer. The entrepreneurship aspiration - wanting to use AI to start or grow a business - resonates most in Africa, South and Central Asia, and Latin America.

"In the third industrial revolution, horses disappeared from city streets, replaced by automobiles. Now people are afraid that they're the horses."
Where Skepticism Is Strongest
North America, Western Europe, and Oceania are more likely to focus on governance concerns and privacy. East Asian participants show elevated concern about cognitive atrophy (18%) and loss of meaning (13%) - a culturally distinct set of worries compared with the West's regulatory emphasis.
This split isn't surprising. People with existing economic advantages are more likely to worry about AI disrupting systems that work for them. People without that advantage are more likely to see AI as a way in.

What AI Is Actually Delivering
When participants described their current experiences, the results were more mixed than the aspirational numbers suggest. Productivity gains came first (32.0% said they'd experienced this), but unmet expectations came second at 18.9% - ahead of cognitive partnership (17.2%), learning support (9.9%), and emotional support (6.1%).
That gap between the 18.8% who want professional excellence and the 32% who say they've hit productivity gains looks good on paper. But unmet expectations at 18.9% is a floor, not a ceiling. It represents the people willing to say the tool let them down directly to the company that made it, via a Claude-run interview. The actual disappointment rate is almost certainly higher.
One participant's description of the AI hallucination problem cuts to the core of why that number matters:
"AI can read past my learning disorder, which is huge. I've always wanted to code but could never write it correctly on my own - with AI, I finally can."
The person who gains the most from AI's accessibility is also the person least equipped to catch its errors. That asymmetry is not new, but the study makes it concrete.

What It Does Not Tell You
The sampling problem here is significant and Anthropic deserves credit for not hiding it. All 80,508 participants were existing Claude users. This is not a survey of humanity's relationship with AI - it's a survey of people who already use Anthropic's product regularly enough to be recruited into a study through that product.
The effects compound. People who stopped using Claude due to reliability issues or found it truly harmful aren't in this dataset. The 67% net positive sentiment figure almost certainly overstates global sentiment, possibly by a wide margin.
The timing creates a second problem. The interviews happened in December 2024. The study published in March 2026. In that 15-month gap, Claude itself has changed substantially - Anthropic released Claude Sonnet 4.6 and Claude Opus 4.6, both clearly more capable than models available in December 2024. What participants described experiencing may not reflect current AI capabilities, for better or worse.
The methodology raises a third question the paper doesn't address: does being interviewed by Claude, about Claude, change what people say? The social dynamics of being asked to critique a tool by that same tool aren't simple.
None of this makes the data worthless. The scale, the multilingual coverage, and the depth of open-ended responses are genuinely unusual. But drawing conclusions about "what humanity wants from AI" from this sample requires far more caution than the headline invites.
Understanding the open-source versus proprietary tension in AI matters for interpreting who gets to run studies like this. Anthropic can do this because it has 80,508 active users and the infrastructure to analyze them. Independent researchers, or labs building open models, don't.
The most durable finding may be the simplest. Across regions, age groups, and use cases, the people who gain the most from AI are often the same people taking on the most risk - from dependence, from hallucinations, from cognitive outsourcing. The study frames this as a paradox. It's actually a pattern familiar from AI safety research: the benefits of a powerful tool tend to concentrate, while the costs distribute unevenly.
